FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Mark 13:33–37

Reflect

Some things in life we see coming. Sometimes we know when a couple is falling in love, even before they themselves are aware. We might know what a boss will do or how events are going to unfold at work. Or it may well be the case that we know how family members will react to good or bad news. But other things in life we cannot see coming. Some things are beyond what we can anticipate or plan for. And those are the times when we must trust in God the most. Jesus tells his disciples that his second coming will be unexpected: “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come” (Mk 13:33). Advent reminds us that we live in the shadow of eternity, attentive, always watching for the unexpected, unanticipated designs of God.

Pray

Heavenly Father, as we journey through life, we are faced with many challenges and distractions that can pull us away from you. We ask for your help in staying watchful and alert so that we may remain faithful to you. Amen.

Live

Today, set up an Advent wreath in your home. Light the first candle and take a moment to think of Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel.

We look forward to continuing this journey with you tomorrow.
