OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OF THE HOLY NAME OF JESUS

John 1:29–34

Reflect

In 1877, a group of laymen in Philadelphia founded the first chapter of the Holy Name Society in the United States. From that humble beginning, similar societies began to be erected across the country and made a significant impact on the Church in America in the twentieth century. The members committed themselves to promoting the veneration of the Holy Name of Jesus through prayer, good works, and public witness. Devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus has medieval roots, with St. Bernadine of Siena (1380–1444) credited with popularizing the devotion in its current form. Down to the present day, the faithful continue to invoke the Holy Name of Jesus in their prayers and daily lives, recognizing the power of the name of Our Lord.

Pray

Jesus, I offer you my thoughts that you may keep them pure, my actions that they may always glorify your name, my words that they may forever give you praise! Amen.

Live

The symbol “IHS” is the symbol of the Holy Name. Look around your local parish church to see if the symbol is portrayed anywhere in the art that adorns your church.

We look forward to continuing this journey with you tomorrow.
