SATURDAY OF THE SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT
Psalm 80
REFLECT
The psalmist writes ,“O God, restore us; / light up your face and we shall be saved” (Ps 80:4). These words haunt many believers. We long to see God’s face. We want to gaze upon the One who made us. C. S. Lewis, meditating on this mystery in his mythic Till We Have Faces, writes: “I saw well why the gods do not speak to us openly, nor let us answer. Till that word can be dug out of us, why should they hear the babble that we think we mean? How can they meet us face to face till we have faces?” Lewis’s point in the tale is that human beings are not yet ready to face divine things. As we continue our earthly pilgrimage, we are learning with greater and greater confidence the language of heaven and being molded more and more into its citizens.
PRAY
Lord Jesus, by your first coming you revealed the face of God to all of humanity. Prepare me for your next coming, that I may gaze upon your glorious face with confidence and joy. Amen.
