THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Matthew 11:2–11

REFLECT

Gaudete!” the Church sings today! “Rejoice!” we cry. Rose vestments and joyful music change the tone of our Sunday Advent meditations. And why? Because our joy flows from Christ, from the promise that he is truly the Messiah. John’s disciples ask about the identity of Jesus in today’s Gospel, and the Lord replies, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them” (Mt 11:4–5). Time and again we see Jesus fulfilling the words of Israel’s prophets. Today we rejoice in hearing again these glad tidings that he is the long-awaited one.

PRAY

Jesus, grant me confidence in your identity as the Messiah. Give me the strength to testify to you whenever I am asked about your power or your love. Amen.
