Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

Luke 2:16–21

REFLECT

A new year. As we look back at the year that has been and look forward to this next year in hope, it’s easy to lose sight of where God has been or where we’ll find God again … and yet, Pope Benedict XVI assured us, “From the contemplation of the face of God are born joy, security and peace.” Mary, the Mother of God, shows us the way. We must keep our eyes fixed on Christ, he who is our peace. Just as Mary held the Christ Child in her arms, we must know that we, similarly, are held by our loving, almighty Father. No trial, suffering, or darkness can compare with love’s embrace!

PRAY

Heavenly Father, grant that through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary we might attain greater knowledge of Christ and increasing confidence in your love. Grant us, through her, your peace. Amen.

LIVE

Spend some time reflecting on a favorite image of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child. If you don’t have one, visit an art museum in person or online to discover a medieval or Renaissance masterpiece.

We look forward to continuing this journey with you tomorrow.
