Saint Raymond Penyafort, priest

1 John 5:14–21

REFLECT

At the age of sixty, Raymond retired. A Dominican priest, having served popes and kings as a confessor and advisor (he was a canon lawyer), he wanted to spend his twilight years in seclusion. And then his Dominican brothers elected him master of the order — that is, the international leader of the Dominicans. He lived another forty years, never retiring to the quiet life he thought he wanted but serving the Church in a host of ways up to his death at age one hundred.

PRAY

Heavenly Father, when I’m ready to quit, grant me the grace to keep on going. Help me to serve you with a willing heart up to my very last days on earth. Amen.
