John 7:40–53
REFLECT
The Pharisees sent guards to arrest Jesus. The guards, however, did not stop him. “Never before has anyone spoken like this one” (Jn 7:46), they said. Jesus spoke to the hearts of his hearers. Great crowds came to hear him. He demonstrated the authenticity of his teaching with miraculous signs. St. John of the Cross says, “In giving us his Son, his only Word (for he possesses no other), he spoke everything to us at once in this sole Word — and he has no more to say … because what he spoke before to the prophets in parts, he has now spoken all at once by giving us the All Who is His Son” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 65). Never before did anyone speak like him, and neither has anyone since.
PRAY
Heavenly Father, during this season of Lent may we have the wisdom to seek and recognize the truth. Help us to be open to your teachings and to treat one another with understanding and compassion. Amen.
